BELIZE – EL SALVADOR – GUATEMALA – HONDURAS

The Central America Tour will take you to 4 different countries .

Day 1: Arrival at San Pedro Sula / airport and transfer to our hotel in the center of town. Greeting by our tourguide and briefing of the motorcycle tour. Overnight in San Pedro Sula .

Day 2/3: San Pedro Sula – Copan Ruinas ( 160 km)

After handing over the motorcycles we leave San Pedro Sula and take a scenic ride on a paved road towards Copan Ruinas the place of the famous Mayan ruins.– a small attractive mountain town with cobblestone streets and red tile roofs. Overnight in Copan Ruinas. We will tour the ruins on the following day with the ball court, the acropolis and the hieroglyphic stairways. The stelae and sculptured decorations of the buildings of Copán are some of the very finest surviving art of ancient Mesoamerica. Overnight in Copan Ruinas

Day 4: Copan Ruinas –  Gracias  ( 130 km )                                      

Shortly after Copan we turn on a dirt road ( 40 km ) following a trail through coffee plantations and cattle farming until we get back to the paved road just before Santa Rosa de Copan.  We arrive in Gracias , a rural mountain town with colonial architecture located at the foot of the Celaque mountans. Overnight in Gracias .

 

Day 5: Gracias  – border crossing to El Salvador – Perquin ( 155 km )

We continue on pavement to Macala ( famous for high quality coffee ) where we hit a dirt road (55 km) and pass the highest mountains from Honduras to El Salvador. This road was the route used to supply the rebels during the El Salvador civil war. Up to 1800 m high we enjoy the fantastic view over the region. Shortly after the border we enter the town of Perquin from the North. Perquin is surrounded by coffee plantations and green pinegroves and is located close to the Honduran border.  Overnight in Perquin.

Day 6: Perquin  –  El Cuco ( 205 km )
Following the paved road from San Francisco Gotera to San Miguel, on our way we pass the volcano San Miquel to the  Pacific beaches of Playa el Cuco. Overnight in El Cuco.

Day 7:  Playa El Cuco – Suchitoto ( 225 km )
Passing several volcanoes we arrive in Suchitoto widely known throughout El Salvador for its church and for its cobblestone roads. It is a very popular weekend destination for Salvadorans. It has broad cultural activities such as art galleries, cultural centers, and handcrafts. Here we stay overnight with an excellent view of Suchitlán lake.

 

 

 

Day 8:    Suchitoto – Ataco ( 150 km )

The small mountain town of Ataco is located  in the department of Ahuachapan at the west of the country. The area is known for one of the best areas for coffee plantations in Central America. Ataco is also knownt of what is known as “Ruta de Las Flores” what means in  “The flowers route”. Overnight in Ataco

Day 9: Ataco  – Antigua ( 225 km )

Early in the morning we head to the Guatemalan border. After passing the border we keep following the Pacific coastline until we reach the highway to the city of Antigua. . It is famous for its well-preserved Spanish Baroque-influenced architecture as well as a number of ruins of colonial churches.   Antigua has been declared by the UNESCO as world heritage site. Overnight in Antigua.

Day10: Antigua – Lago Atitlan ( 78 km )

In the morning we take a stroll through the ancient ruined city of Antigua – the former capital of Guatemala for more than 200 years ago. After lunch we are leaving Antigua and turn off from the main road following a small dirt road towards the Lago Atitlan – one of the most beautiful lakes of the world surrounded by three impressive volcanoes . Here you will enjoy a fantastic view over the mountainous region. Overnight in Panajachel.

Day11: Panajachel – tour around the lake ( 120 km )

A daytour along the lake to see some of the colorful indigenous towns surounded by impressive volcanoes is on our program today. Overnight in Panajachel

Day12: Panajachel – Chichicastenango ( 40 km )

Morning visit of the market of Panajachel, which is the most popular tourist center around the lake offering souvenirs and handicraft of the native indians. After lunch we ride on a winding paved road over the mountains ( 2000m) to Chichicastenango. Here we find the most colorful market of the Mayan indians in the highlands. Overnight in Chichicastenango

Day 13: Chichicastenango – Coban ( 165 km )

A day on an exiting dirt road will test the rider’s skill today. We will pass over one of the highest mountains of Guatemala with breathtaking scenarios. Temperature will warm up as we descent into the depths of some canyons with tropical climate. You will be awarded with panoramic views of the Alta Verapaz region. Off road riding skills are recommend for this section. Arrival near Coban late afternoon. Overnight in Santa Cruz de Verapaz.

Day 14: Coban – Sayaxche ( 175 km )

We continue on to Coban , the center town of the Alta Verapaz region famous for its coffee plantations. Then we follow the road to Chisec into the remote jungle areas of the Peten with its humid climate. For the most part only a few roads lead into the area and the forest remains mostly unspoiled. The Peten is still the last refuge for exotic birds, boars, jaguars and other endangered animals. We pass some Mayan villages having lunch in a basic “comedor” of the local Indians before we spend the night in Sayaxche overlooking the Rio “La Passion”.

Day 15 : Sayaxche – Lago Peten Itza – Tikal ( 145 km )

As the Peten has the greatest concentration of Maya ruins found in Guatemala, we take the chance to see the Mayan site in Ceibal, only 12 km away from Sayaxche. A dirt road ( 15 km -one way ) leads to the ruins hidden in the dense jungle. We cross the river “La Passion” in a ferry boat and head off to the Lago Peten Itza for lunch in Flores .We tour the lake around the eastern side and reach the entrance of the National Park Tikal.  Overnight inTikal.

Day 16: Tikal ( 40 km )

Today’s highlight is the morning visit of the greatest of all Classic Mayan sites located 40km north of the lake “Peten Itza”. The massive ruins of Tikal are concentrated in the dense rainforest. In the high canopy above howler and spider monkeys swing from giant ceiba and cedar trees. A specialized guide will take us on the trails cut through forest to all the major archeological groups. Return in the afternoon to the Lago Peten Itza where we spend another night at a jungle lodge right at the lake and enjoy a late afternoon swim.

Day 17: Lago Peten Itza – San Ignacio / Belize (120 km)

Leaving the lake behind we ride about 40 km towards the Belize border and turn into a dirt road ( 15 km – one way ) leading to the Mayan site of Yaxha beautiful set in lush jungle area with howler monkeys and parrots sitting in the trees. After the visit we cross the border and ride about 15 km to San Ignacio (Belize), where we spend the night at Cahal Pech Village Resort, where you can enjoy splendid hill top views of the Mayan mountains and the surrounding villages from your own veranda. Overnight in San Ignacio

Day 18 : Day trip to Caracol ( 170 km )

We take a new paved road to Caracol into the exiting jungle of Caracol. The site was discovered in 1938. In 1986, an elaborately carved stone was discovered which described a victory by Caracol over Tikal. This discovery positioned Caracol as the supreme Maya city. It’s largest pyramid stands 140ft (44 meters) high and is considered the tallest man made structure in Belize. Once it was one of the most powerful cities in the entire Mayan world. Not only the preeminent and largest Mayan site in Belize, but also exciting for its jungle setting and bird life. Overnight in San Ignacio

Day 19: San Ignacio  – Rio Dulce ( 240 km )  

We leave San Ignacio in Belize, cross the border over into Guatemala, then we head off to the West on a dirt road ( 65 km ) with a stop in Poptun at the hacienda Finca Izobel for lunch We will arrive at the “Rio Dulce” in the afternoon and take a little boatride ( optional ) to see the old spanish fortress. Overnight at Rio Dulce.

Day 20: Rio Dulce – San Pedro Sula ( 210 km )

Passing through vast banana plantations we cross the border to Honduras and reach the Caribbean beaches of Omoa around lunchtime. After lunch we leave Omoa and ride back to the busy city of San Pedro Sula , where our motorcycle adventure ends. Overnight in San Pedro Sula.

Day 21: Departure  Transfer from your hotel to the airport and flight back.

Road condition: 90 % paved roads / 10 % dirt roads

Motorcycles: Yamaha XT 600 E  / XT 660 R / Suzuki DR 650 SE

Riding Skills: Riding will be both on pavement and dirt and gravel roads but not on rough terrain.
